Laura has been working at ILRC since 1997 as our Latino Community Disability Educator and Advocate. Laura has a learning disability. This is what she had to say about Tools for Living Independently.
I use a computer program called Inspiration. It helps me organize my ideas, put them in order, and it helps me to write things like articles, and reports.
I use electronics like this electronic appointment book with alarms; it keeps phone numbers too.
My water-resistant wristwatch helps me, I never take it off, it has an alarm that I set as a reminder.
I turn off the overhead lights and use my desk lamp, it helps me to get rid of distractions. I also use a Walkman to screen out distractions, it helps me focus helps me calm down.
I use double sets of keys and a key clip for my pants.
I use a backpack one bag for everything everything in one bag, its harder to leave behind.
I use a wallet with a chain that hooks to my belt loop so I dont lose it!
How I use AT, its a strategy, its a way of doing things. Its not just one thing, its lots of things that everybody uses, put altogether is what makes a difference for me.
