Mary has worked as ILRCs Deaf Services Coordinator since 1989. She uses Tools for Living for her deafness and partial blindness and also for mobility.
I use various signaling devices and paging systems, like a light signal when a phone call comes in or when someone is waiting for me in the lobby.
Flashing light fire detectors.
I use an alarm clock that vibrates.
I use a TTY but e-mail is fast replacing the TTY system it saves a lot of time and it makes my life a whole lot easier.
With this Assistive Technology I am alerted.
I use a cane, a walker, and a manual wheelchair when necessary.
Rollerball pens which really make a difference and help to decrease pain in my arm.
A trackball for my computer.
I use a shower chair that allows me to transfer easily. I should put grab bars in but I havent yet. I also use a bedside commode.
When I need it its there and I feel it gives me mobility I wouldnt have without it. Even using the commode it can feel degrading because I cant control my bladder, but the commode gives me a sense of safety, a sense of control, of self-direction. Im in a place in my life now that I dont care about what people think of me. It lets me go on about what I am doing.
