Charlotte is one of the Receptionists at ILRC and has been working here since 1997. Charlotte uses Assistive Technology primarily to help with mobility.
I use a Folding Cane that is easy to travel with and doesnt get in
the way.
A Walker (with a seat) means that I can do errands, shopping, cleaning,
and cooking. I can stop and sit when I need to rest. The Walker has a basket
to put things so I can carry and move things.
A new Scooter. Now I can get around and go for long distances which
I was unable to do before because I cant walk very far.
Grabber helps me reach things on the floor and on shelves or across the
desk.
My Headset helps me talk on the phone without hurting the arthritis in my neck.
At work I use an adjustable back chair with no arms it makes it easier for me to turn and do work.
Knee Supports I wear every day to help stabilize my knees.
At home I use an adjustable bed. An Ice Pack and Heating Pad that help with swelling and pain from arthritis.
My bathtub has a seat that folds up and down so I can sit while I shower.
I use a hand-held shower so I dont have to bend over to wash my hair.
I can also use the hand-held shower to put the hot water on my spine and
knees where the pain is the worst. I use a side door to help me get in and
out of the tub which especially helps on days where I cant
lift my legs to get into the tub. I also have grab bars in the bathtub.
I couldnt pick one thing that is most important to me it is the Assistive Technology altogether that makes such a big difference for me. It makes me feel like I have control of my own life I dont have to depend on someone else to do things for me.
