Assistive Technology sounds cold and complex, but it can be as warm as a teddy bear you use as a neck pillow, and as simple as Velcro fasteners on your shoes. For some people it means the difference between a shirt made with snaps instead of buttons. For others it means having grab bars in the bathroom, or using a certain type of computer software.
Assistive Technology is an important tool in allowing people with disabilities
to live full lives. We like to think of Assistive Technology as Tools
for Living that enhance the freedom, functionality, and ability of people
to live
independently.
When ILRC staff began talking about Tools for Living, we noticed that even though we have different disabilities, we found many of us were using the same Tools to help us live independently. We also discovered that we use a lot of little things that make life easier. Our discussions led to creating this booklet.
This is a chance for us to share our experiences with you. Each ILRC staff
person featured in the following pages has a disability, and uses Tools for
Living Independently. Each person answered the following questions:
What kind of Tools for Living do you use?
What difference do the Tools make in your life?
If you had to choose one Tool for Living that makes the biggest difference
in your life, what would it be?
Come share their answers you may find a Tool that will work YOU!
